A W-8BEN form is a legally required document for the ultimate beneficial owner of listed securities deriving income in the United States to ensure compliance with U.S. tax regulations. Non-U.S. residents must have a completed W-8BEN form to declare their tax status to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) so that the appropriate level of tax is withheld. When you sign up and fund your Stake Wall St account for the first time, we digitally complete the W-8BEN (or W9 if you’re a U.S. tax resident) on your behalf.
Purpose of the W-8BEN form
A completed W-8BEN reduces withholding tax on dividends from 30% to 15% on U.S.-domiciled holdings.
Stake has streamlined this process with our U.S. broker-dealer to ensure your documentation is completed and the appropriate withholding tax is automatically applied to your account.
You can view your current W-8BEN form in the Stake app by heading to: More > Tax & Documents > U.S. tax form. Please note that the W-8BEN remains valid for three years, after which we may require you to self-certify via our broker partner's portal.
We charge a one-time fee of US$5, deducted from your first funding in the fee breakdown. You'll see this fee on the funding confirmation page before you make your first deposit.
